Logan (2017)

2 hours robbed…

Pharmacide definition: The art of making poison.

On several occasions, we are shown a direct advertisement of soft drinks, and this is even discussed by characters inside the giant vessel.

Logan is a soldier, who is a victim of pharmaceutical experiments.
Xavier is a “god” submitted to sedative treatments.
Barbiturates are mentioned.
A drug that acts as a central nervous system depressant, and can, therefore, produce a wide spectrum of effects, from mild sedation to death.
Ibuprofen is a medication in the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug class that is used for treating pain, fever, and inflammation. This includes painful menstrual periods, migraines, and rheumatoid arthritis

Phonetically, Soldier = Soul-dier/dyer. Either a corrupted soul who chooses to end its own life, either a dishonest person, a hypocrite. Which is basically similar.
We are told the origin is in the ancient Italian units being paid in salt.
And we readily accept this is the reason for keeping this nomenclature for centuries…

Logan is shown self-inflicting cuts. If you argue with it, then you fail to see how he himself fails to see reason and purpose.

The given name Logan is derived from the Scottish surname Logan, which is in turn derived from a placename. The likely origin of this surname is a place located near Auchinleck, in Ayrshire. The place name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic lagan, which is a diminutive of lag, which in turn means “hollow“.

Hollow. Definition.
1. One has a hole or empty space inside.
2. One without significance.

We can now easily see this theme, in the “soldier” connotation as well as the
“penetrating punch”.
This also explains the reason for Laura repeating all those names of her friends. For you to keep your mind off the main theme.

The vessel motif.
Logan is a driver, and his profession is being “taken” by robotic machines.
This is not a problem, really, unless we take into consideration the “ghost in the shell” principal, wherein we are governing our body and mind, not receiving pressure nor afflicting pain to others.
Xavier is being held in a gigantic water tank. Empty of water of course.
This tank is scratched, and being dark – from the inside – looks like a starred night.
We see a man who is totally alone in the world. This is what subliminal messages are.

The train is a symbol for the “train of thought”.

The scene where Laura breaks a window with a ball, and then a fat woman comes out to complain, was a bit strange for me, as I can’t see the message in it, or why was it necessary.

Xavier is growing plants. Symbolizes planet earth. He is mirrored by the unidentifiable younger mutant who murders the captain at the end of the film, by growing malicious weed grass at will.

His character is one of the few Shakespearean figures to take on a life of its own ‘’outside’’ Shakespeare’s own work: as Russell Hoban put it, “Caliban is one of the hungry ideas, he’s always looking for someone to work him into being…Caliban is a necessary idea”.

The fact we are presented with this character here for the first time – raises the question “why?”. And why is he so vulnerable to sunlight? To the light of the soul?

This movie was advertised as a sophisticated film –
as a comic book plot adapted for a grown-up, responsible audience.
It even made it to theatres who only show quality films exclusively…

But I assure you, it is the same old comic-book, created by the government to easily spread ideology from a young age. Umberto Eco wrote a book on this.
Wonder why we still have it as a cultural phenomenon?
