Xavier is growing plants. Symbolizes planet earth. He is mirrored by the unidentifiable younger mutant who murders the captain at the end of the film, by growing malicious weed grass at will.
Caliban.
His character is one of the few Shakespearean figures to take on a life of its own ‘’outside’’ Shakespeare’s own work: as Russell Hoban put it, “Caliban is one of the hungry ideas, he’s always looking for someone to work him into being…Caliban is a necessary idea”.
The fact we are presented with this character here for the first time – raises the question “why?”. And why is he so vulnerable to sunlight? To the light of the soul?
